Silent Keys:

With great sadness, I report the passing of Ray May - K5AZU. Ray was 80 years of age and was first licensed at 18 years old. He retired with over 30 years of service in Television Broadcast Engineering.  https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/phillip-ray-may-sr-k5azu-silent-key.593097/

ARRL News:

On December 18th We received an email from Steve Ewald WV1X regarding a "NEW ARES" coming.  Many of you have received an email from ARRL HQ about the upcoming changes. We are receiving a lot of emails about this topic.  Please remain positive and let’s see what transpires. We are all in a wait and see mode.  As soon as I find more on the subject I’ll let you know.

News From Around the State:

Hats off to the Region 5 ARES and Region 7 ARES groups for participating in the December Skywarn Recognition Day Event from their respective National Weather Service offices.

New DMR repeater will be going up in Springhill, Louisiana.  A big pat on the back to all the hams in Northeast Louisiana/Region 8 ARES for working on this project.  For more details please visit: http://www.springhillhamradio.com/putting-in-the-new-443-750-dmr-repeater/

Several groups around the state will be participating in the January 2018 Winter Field Day event.  This event kicks off at 1 pm Central time / 1900 Zulu at January 27th, and goes for 24 hours.  For those that participate, please send photos and information to me for the next edition of the SM newsletter.  Rules: https://www.winterfieldday.com/rules

New WINLINK station is up and running in southwest Louisiana, thanks to Chris Ancelet, N5MCY.  Chris is a Region 4 EC who volunteers his services for Acadia Parish.  He is also one of the Sunday evening’s 3873 kHz ARES net control operators.  Job well done!

Glen Thibodeaux,  KF5FNP, also has a WINLINK station up and running in southwest Louisiana.  Glen is the Region 4 DEC and also the ARES Net Control Manager.   Operating WINMOR, he can be found at 3583.5 (dial 3582.00) kHz USB.

From the Baton Rouge Area: W5KID/Pearl Harbor Day Event was held on December 7th. Operators present included: Buddy Brown, N5BUD; Dan Lot, KF5TQN; John Krupsky, WA5MLF; Thornton Cofeld, K5HLC; Mary McDonald, WB5LBR & Charlie Mercier, KG5VTE.
