This Solar Week

The DX_Central Summary Panel shown running on Ubuntu Linux.
(30 JULY 2010) The DX_Central application summary panel tells the story for the week. The sunspot number is above 30 for the forth day this week with only one day (Wed) that dipped to 15. The SFI has been making a slow excursion from the low of 68 nearly a month ago to peaking just above 85 on Monday. This would be good, save for the half dozen or so solar flares occuring three days this week, and the giant corona hole stretching from the Northern pole to the high lattitudes of the Northern Hemisphere making DX signals very weak and noisy.

The sunspot number is currently still holding and may rise on late Sunday or Monday. The solar wind speed is very fast now and winds are well into positive territory. They may slow a bit this weekend. It remains to be seen if this will benifit contesters this weekend.

The NASA STEREO rotating image shows sunspot activity just over the Western horizon about to rotate into view which will be minor and should not be of much consequence this weekend. Contesters this weekend will not find the upper HF bands favorable with the exception of a few DX openings here in the Louisiana Section, waining toward Monday. You might hear the new beacon from Kyrgyzstan if the Auroral intensity we have seen of late continues. Ten meter openings have been reported in the Section for the last three weeks but are very sporatic and short lived.

Check this page for the latest predictions based on HamCap. Just click the link to the worldwide maps labeled "HamCap: World Map". These maps are based on the current sunspot number and K-index readings for a displayed time period centered here in the Louisiana Section. It will help you make decisions about which band may have the best chance for DX in the target area you wish to work. Prediction charts for specific target areas are also listed. Get your own copy of the Ham Cap application to run on Windows [native] or Linux [under wine] from Afreet Software. The DX_Central application shown is available for Linux or Windows by clicking the link provided on the right sidebar.

New Radio Beacon in Kyrgyzstan

(21 JULY 2010) According to information from Oleg, EX8MLT in Kyrgyzstan, he has started to operate the first constantly fuctioning radio beacon for the VHF-range of 6 meters in the country. It is located on the Southern Shore of Issyk lake some 600+ mi North and East of Kabul, Afganistan.

Beacon Parameters are;

Power: 60W
Mode: CW only
Call: EX1SIX
Ant: Vertical GP
Freq: 50.026 Mhz
Grid: MN82sd in the village of Tamga, Kul

The above beacon is made possible through the efforts of N3DB and a worldwide project to install 6 meter beacons.

22 July 2010 - 2 Sept 2010 KL7RRC: Chirikof Island (NA-235) June 16th, 2010 our shipment is loaded for transportation to Alitak. We are thankful to Mr. Woody Knebel from Ocean Beauty Seafoods for help with logistics for our expedition.
We also would like to thank Mike Crossley KF7BIG for getting 2nd generator for us to loading dock on a very short notice and Mike Chaplin W7SSO for his technical expertise helping us to fix second Ameritron ALS-600S amplifier!
Our estimated departure date is July 21st from Akhiok or Alitak, depending on weather.
We had plans for Seal Islands (NA-239), but it is highly unlikely at this time due to financial and schedule concerns.
Since the island has two lakes, fastest, safest and easiest way is charter an airplane from Kodiak. With many positive referrals from Kodiak we contacted Mr. Steve Harvey from Harvey Flying Service and reached agreement for transportation of our group.
It will be typical Russian Robinson Club operation (4 or more Ops) and about one week on the island, depending on WX.
Merle K5MT (ex N6PYN) and Brad KA5CDJ activated NA-239 Seal Island in 2009, but they had to leave ASAP due to circumstances beyond their control.
Planned call: KL7RRC on Chirikof.
